Languages

In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

Stages 4 and 5

At St George Girls High School, all students study a short course in French, Japanese and Latin in Year 7.
In Year 8 students undertake the compulsory study of 100 hours of languages in either French, Japanese or Latin.
Students have the option to continue the study of languages in both Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10)

Stage 6

Students have the option to continue the study of languages in Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12). Additional extension courses are offered in Year 12 for students studying French, Japanese and Latin.

The study of these languages is enhanced by excursions, competitions and language-specific events such as the Classic Camp and our annual Languages Day.
